At the end of the 20th century, you were a big shot if you had a handheld mobile phone, a GSM-compatible mobile phone or a pager provided by your company. And today, at the beginning of the 21st century, it’s not such a big deal if you have a company smartphone, laptop or even… Company drones.
Has God skipped 100 years? Is it the 22nd century already? Something like Windows 8 -> Windows 10 but even bigger? Because I kind of lost track of the smooth transition between company pagers and company drones…
Let’s theorize that God has nothing to do with this and talk about the reality of company drones as we see it.
For example, we have six Parrot drones at the office. Just to play around. First we got the ground-based Parrot MiniDrone Jumping Sumo and the flying Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider. Then we continued with four more similar drones to drive and fly – two Parrot MiniDrone Jumping Race, one Parrot MiniDrone Mars Airborne Cargo, and another Rolling Spider.
Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider
It looks like an insect, buzzes like a huge mosquito, flies like a quadcopter and has wheels to move in any direction on flat surfaces. This is the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider, and it’s one of the most fun toys we have at the office!
You can really choose to whether fly or drive this drone, which costs only about $100. You can even drive it on the ceiling because to use its wheels it relies again on the power of its propellers. So it kind of both flies and drives at the same time.
If its battery could last for more than 8 minutes, it would be great. But, well, at least we have many batteries and a big charger for them all.
Also, all MiniDrone vehicles use the same batteries so you can swap them.
To operate it, you only need to have the FreeFlight 3 app, available for Android, iOS, and Windows tablets and smartphones. It has preloaded instructions for stunts that you can make with a single gesture – flips, shakes, etc.
It’s also nice that the app allows you to film the drone in action with the camera of the smart device that you use to operate it.
Perhaps you wonder whether it has a camera. Well, it does but it sucks and it’s really hard to take even a remotely decent photo with it. They shouldn’t have put it on the drone at all.
Otherwise, this is a really fun toy to play with. And quite portable – you can easily carry it anywhere you want.
